Whew....Way too many photos. Should blog more often.

David is building a great fort in the backyard.
Initially, it was going to be a small and simple project.
The kids have had so much fun helping him and soon it will
be completed.  We're having to put screens over all the
windows because of those Texas mosquitoes.

Dante turned five and got a skateboard.  We have
a friend whose married with 3 little girls but enjoys
taking Dante to the skateboard park and reliving
his earlier glory days.

Uncle Wade, Aunt Claudia and Emma came to visit.  Unfortunately,
the only photos we really took were at Dante's soccer game.
Izze wouldn't leave Uncle Wade's side...And our boy
was busy scoring like he was meant to play soccer.
We love watching him play.  We've always been somewhat
anti-trophy people but we were so proud of him when his
coach doted on him at his soccer party.  And yes, the trophy
was the highlight of his life for about a day.

Typical day in the Torres household...
It can be a little hard to see in black and white, but
yes, they are covered in mud.  I told them that
people pay lots of money for such mud baths.

Izze turning four.  Highlight of her day was her pink cake and her
Lelli Kelli pink sparkly mary jane shoes that her
Aunt Claudia just knew she would love.
They are her favorite.
Nani, you would be proud of these shoes.

In our family, it is a week of celebrations...First Izze, then
me, then Dante.  The brilliance of always having the
two kids celebrate their birthdays together
was unknown until this year, when we celebrated them on
their respective days.  Celebration station.  But having their
own day was important if not a little awkward for Izze.
She really was confused but eventually embraced it all.
Well, we love everyone.  Life in the Torres household is
great.  In the vein of Goldilocks, it's not too busy,
not too boring, it's just right.  Much love, am

A Temple Missionary's Day

Hi all-
Edgar asked about what we do so I thought it might be beneficial to let you know how our week goes. On Tuesdays and Saturdays we start at 6:30 am and have a preparation meeting at 7:00 with all the workers. We then have an endowment session at 8:00 and often are asked to be the witnesses or officiator and/or follower. Sometimes we stay out and do initiatories. Same with the next session at 10:00. After the 10:00 session we usually do sealings. Today we had a group from one on the islands and had a baptismal session at 8:00 am. Have to fit everything in. Last week we had a group from BYU semester abroad in New Zealand that were on their way home and wanted to do baptisms. The arrived after the temple had closed, so we reopened and did baptisms for them. I was the youngest so I was elected to do the baptizing. Still recovering! We have the BYU girl's soccer team coming next week and will have more work to do. On Wed-Fri we start at 12:30 pm and normally have sealings, initiatories and then sessions at 4:00 and 6:00. We often have sealings after the 6:00 which means we are finished at about 9:00pm. These are long days especially when after Friday night as we start at 6:30 the next morning. We have to be very flexible and ready to do any and everything. Do a lot of training as we continue to try to get the Fijians up to speed. It will still be a long time until they will be able to handle everything by themselves. We get a new temple president in November and he'll probably be able to have at least one Fijian as a counselor. We have a lot of brothers and sisters who do great work but we need more of them. We do go to church at the local ward, but do not have assignments. I do substitute for the Temple Preparation teacher. We do visit a branch about 2 hours away about once a month and will be going there this saturday afternoon for a baptism at the beach or river. We'll spend the night and then go to church on Sunday before we come back. Monday is our day off for shopping, cleaning etc. We do have a SUV that we share between 3 couples so we get downtown often and do a little touring. Our apartment is small and has AC in the bedrooms only. Not bad though- at least it's comfortable for sleeping. The kitchen lacks an oven but we have decided that it's OK- no baking. They are building a new apartment for us next to the temple that we should get into by October. It will only be one bedroom, but new! Our days and weeks are full and Sister Wettstein cannot keep up with what day it is. Time flies and we are 3 and 1/2 months into our mission. The weather here is pretty constant, warm and humid with quite a bit of rain. The city we live in, Suva, is the largest in Fiji and is a port city. 2 large cruise lines came in this weekend and 18 taxis stopped by the temple for picture taking as the temple is listed as a sight to see in the city- actually it's the best looking building in the country. We can look out and see the bay water but no beaches. Have to leave the city for that. I hope that this gives you a better idea of what we are up to. Dad

Sister Johnson in Hawaii

I saw this floating restaurant in the harbor and thought of old Sr. Johnson in our old Champions ward. She is from an old royal Hawaiian family, and was dirt poor growing up. She told this story about going to the temple as a small child. The family had not been sealed and her oldest sister was 17 and at 18 could not be sealed as a child. The family sold everything they could and still there was not enough cash for an inside passage inside the boat. The mom told the kids to put on their sunday clothes and then sold everything they owned except a pair of play clothes for each child. The father said they must travel inside the boat over to the main island so they would arrive dry and proper for going to the temple; however, on going home they all slept on the deck and arrived with sea spray all over them as they slept. In the royal Hawaiian family they had what they called white Hawaiians [Sr. Johnson is a pale white color and has black eyes] and black Hawaiians. Her daughter Sr. Cook is a black Hawaiian. They were also very tall. And out in the sun their skin turned the color of a very dark brown. Sr. Johnson told me she also fell for a cute, white boy, blond&blue eyed guy at BYU and he was a non member, too!! She also told the story several times of what she called " God bless the drunken sailor, story." She was very little and her mom sent her to the store with 75 cents to buy some bread for dinner. Walking into the store a very drunk sailor came up to her and ask how much money she had and how many kids there were in her family [9]. He took all of his 75 dollars-his pay for the month and bought all of the food he could and then he took her home in a taxi and gave it all to her mom. Sr. Johnson said the moral of the story was that God knew they were so poor that he sent the sailor. Then he [God] could bless the sailor as needed. And oh yes, never get in a cab with a drunken sailor. Her mom prayed for that sailor for years, " and please Lord bless that drunken sailor, that he may come our way again." Afterall, if the guy stayed alive then he had for sure been blessed, for his kind and needed gifts.

I have been so surprised at the incredible senior missionaries and other temple staff we have here. To be at same place and missionaries gives a blessing of a different kind = companionship. We will have friends in Utah and Washington state for ever. Also our friend Br. Vitinavulagi's daughter is a stewardess for Continental airlines and is in the Inwood Ward!!! We had missed each others calls before we left. Anyways, we will for sure have them come and stay [Pres. Wells says at least 1 month] a few weeks. That has to be another " it's a small world moment" when we fire up the grill and cook some steaks instead of breadfruit or roti. All of my love Mum Bula Yinaka, ya'll...

We are going to a baptism in Singatoka this weekend. We'll leave early from our temple shift and see the baptism in the pacific and then spend the night and go to church. We are so blessed each time we go there. Dad and Br. Bohman always give blessings to members, active and not so active. And then they start to come to church and bring their kids and grandkids. The count for sundays is up to 55 now for the branch, and they never have to provide speakers since they always have extra missionaries. And Br. Bohman is now in the branch presidency sos we always

Blake W & Ryan Roberson Quito, Ecuador

When Blake was on his mission in 1996 & 1997 to Quito, Ecuador I was Sr. Judy Roberson's visiting teacher. Actually it was the 2nd time I had been her vt. Judy was very concerned for her son's church status and had good reason to be. Ryan had been a golden child in a family with many problems. He had graduated from Eisenhower High School in Houston, and was attending West Point. He had many church experiences to shore up his testimony, but mostly he felt these were embarrasing and just brushed them off. His mission was to teach the poor Portuguese sailors in the seaport area of New Jersey. His mission was to show him how blessed he was, and to love the Lord more through this tough mission. Were much is given.....much is expected. His mission was not showy, flashy, or up to his standard, for himself, being such a golden child and he was just plain embarrassed about the whole 2 years. Don't think me mean or nosy, these were his mom's words, and I was her visiting teacher and friend.
While Blake, [that tall red headed, Wettstein boy] was in Ecuador the following happened in 3 months. I must say that I made fun of Judy's simple plan, and we as a family had many laughs at her expense. [I am still so sorry, but will always tell this story with myself painted as the fool] I went to her and she announced that Ryan was in Panama, and was serving as a MP [military police]. He was inactive and she was desperate.. She had been praying and had made the following plan; Ryan was to somehow find 'that tall red headed Wettstein boy' because he was the only good mormon she knew in south america. "How I asked?" She hadn't figured that part out yet, but it was a good plan she thought. I reported home her plan we all hooted with laughter. The next month we received a note from Elder Wettstein and were notified that he had been sent into the jungles of Ecuador because of an unofficial haircut!!! And he did this all by himself, too! You see in this country the native men shave their hair except for an oval on the top and coat it with a red mud-this is to show that they are native indians and were proud of it. So this stupid white boy shaved his red head, like the native men and was he the hit of Quito, for 3 days. And then off to the jungle for the pale white head to grow back and cover his little red pin head with lovely red hair. He [stupid red headed missonary] complained to the mission president that,"he would get skin cancer and desperately needed a hat". "No", you see the local drug kingpen and assorted dealers, they dressed like the Mormon missionaries. Yes, white shirts ,jeans and oh yes-a hat. Tough luck elder. See you in a few months, if you were lucky. So when I next say Judy didn't have the heart to tell her that Blake was AWOL from Quito. And to make matters worse she had added another person to the short list . The prophet. President Hinkley. This would be just the right combo to help her failing soldier. I just couldn't make the words come out of my mouth and say he was gone, just when he was needed, that tall, red headed Wettstein boy. And again I was the fool and laughed. And then God, himself stepped in and we received the following letter.- Mom and dad you will never believe what has happened. I am in Quito, at the mall. I bought new shoes - no holes for water and bugs to crawl into. My head isn't sun burned any more. He had written the note on the flip side of the paper liner his food had come in. He was eating a foot long hot meatball sandwich with extra cheese and jalapenos and the first cold drink in months. And that was were he stopped...... You will never believe this but I just look up and saw Ryan Roberson, in the food court in Quito. I walked up to him and he said "you are that tall red headed Wettstein boy, aren't you?' Why are you here I asked? It seemed the army had sent him to Quito to re-tool his portuguese into spanish. And way are you here, he asked. The Prophet is in town I said. It seemed he [ the prophet] had just changed his itinerary for south america. We just found out this past monday. It was a total surprise. We saw him this afternoon and he will be here this evening and tomorrow morning. It is just around the corner. Why don't you come? Somethings you should never forget and this is one of them. I always cry and feel so badly about myself. I'm crying as I write his note. Remember somethings you should never forget... Ryan, who was about to be raised to the rank of Lt. Colonel, was found dead in his apt. this last december 2006. He was not active and we never knew if he went to hear the prophet, Pres. Hinckley in Quito, with Blake ,that tall red headed Wettstein boy. He was bright and could have brought much to the world and spread the gospel in his many travels, but chose otherwise. His father, Ray, went through his golden child's belongings to find answers to his beloved son's life and found truths that pierce a father's soul. "Judy, he said" never open this trunk and always remember Ryan as a beautiful little boy who was now at home with his loving Savior." April 20, 2008

Kalvin and Sage's music video

Kalvin and Sage's uncle Nik came over yesterday and made a video of them with their cousin Robyn. They had so much fun and Nik is so fun with them. He directed them and they had no clue why he was asking them to do all these random things, but look how awesome it turned out. They think they are the coolest things in the world because they are now on Youtube....Kalvin's lifelong dream come true.... Now what?

Rain and Conference

Island offshore from Suva where they exile all the deposed leaders after a coup
Mom and the other sister missionaries at the temple

Hi All-

Well, we were able to see all of the conference sessions yesterday and today. The rains were heavy but it cooled things off so much that many of the locals were wearing sweaters and jackets. This is for 84 Degree weather. One member of a stake presidency was wearing a ski parka. Oh well, it was perfect for us. We saw the last 2 sessions of conference this afternoon as your mother has already told you about our one week timing delay. They were tremendous sessions and those of you that missed the prophet's address for Sunday morning missed a real treat. I have never heard Pres. Monson speak so powerfully. He is a tremendous prophet and it was a pleasure to sustain him in the solemn assembly. The other addresses especially by the apostles were special and definitely worth watching again. It's difficult sometimes being away from the states and seeing things live but it was just as powerful for us with an overflowing stake center of the Fijian saints. We will have a special broadcast next week for our stake conference that is just for the South Pacific. Should be a very special treat for these people. Incidentally, one of the brethren sustained to the 1st quorum fo the 70 was Allan Packer who is Boyd K Packer's son and he and I worked together in Caracas. Wish him well. The conference was great and the spirit so strong that I didn't really want it to end. Will have to wait 6 more months for more of the same.

We are doing fine and hoping that the rains willstop soon. Has been raining heavily for several days and enough is enough. Had to taxi a taxi home from the temple the other night(3 blocks) because it was raining so hard. They are doing a lot of construction in front of the temple and the mud and muck make it difficult getting in. Hopefully it will dry up soon and they can get on with the construction and get it finished on time. We are still trying to get a new phone line so that our emails, blog, skype etc. will be faster and clearer. Working with these folks to get things done is often very trying and they do things on Fiji time-kind of like Mormon standard time. Trying to get on to the new family search program so we can do some family history while we are here. The new program is great as we looked at it on someone else's account. Have our p-day tomorrow and have lots of errands to run including filing my IRS extension. Hope it gets there. Am tired tonight but wanted to catch you up on things. Love, Dad

Conference and an air inversion

We are so blessed here, anad I'll tell you why. I wrote that we were to have all of the power in the Suva area down for the entire weekend, But in saying that it ment that we could not see conference because of the no power thing. So the church was trying to buy generators for the buildings, that was far to much moola. But God intervened. We had a huge air inversion over the island and it was not safe to work on the power because of the rain. ha,ha,ha. In the pacific we get conference on a disk in the mail. Other wise, we would see it at 4:00 in the morning on sunday and then would finish on monday, at who knows when. So our broadcast went just as scheduled and with the inversion it was cool as can be... Today we will watch the final sunday sessions. I had never been in a solemn assembly, and it was so very meanningful. Just watching all of the priesthood quorums stand, reminded me or the Book of Mormon and King Benjamin. That is where we are reading now. And how all of the other groups were called to stand and and vote was amazing!!
A lite lunch was served by our ward, Samabula 2nd. We had a sticky rice cooked with some sugar. And it was served with a potato and boney chicken curry sauce. There were only chopped up boney back pieces to eat. I tryed to eat the chicken but, the bones just were to much of a mess, so, I had the bones on the side and it was good, for curry.

I was assigned the spiritual thought for this past saturday in the temple and when we get back from conference I'll write it down. This the story of Blake and Ryan Roberson meeting in the food court in Quito. Ecuador. Dad is my dictonary and has announced that he is taking a shower and is not available for spelling...law dee daw. Next week is our conference from SLC for the entire Pacific. So now the powere outage is scheduled for next weekend. We are getting more , I have completly forgotten the damn word ...transformers... That's it. So much for my old speller man and my needing him. So we will see how the power and our conference works out. Luve MUM

Guess what no power for 36 hours!!!!!!

Well as Mandy and I would say "what the crap " THe pres just called and gave me this little tidbit or news..... The power will be turned off saturday at 11:00am until sunday evening at 11"00pm. Last saturday the same thing happened, except thepower came back on 6 hrs. early. The temple lost all of our water because the font just took it all. So now when we have a power loss, my job is to turn off the font. It is not any fun when you can't flush anything in the building. We just put up a sign saying no water on the bathroom doors and that's it. If there had been a real emergency there were 2 toilets in the font changing rooms that were good for 2 flushes. Yea, "what the crap, in a third world country it really has a new meaning, really." Br. Nielson just stopped by and announced he was having an icecream eating contest at his flat at noon on sat. He had just come from the store with lots of ice cream.

We are still laughing our heads off watching the chicken dance on the little video!!! It took about 25 minutes [ I just asked Dad how long ] to load and then we have it, WOW. Claudia you dear woman you do the best you can with your 2 children at the roller rink. Wade just does't have butt does he.

Just a funny thing here about the different way tithing is handled here. The night guard at the temple is also the ward clerk. His office is in the Wells garage. Sr' Wells saw the tithing in a bank zippered bag and asked what it was and he told her. He is from a village and takes a bus to the temple every night at 6:00. Anyhoo, she told him to find a place to stach it because she couldn't have it in the house. So this is where he decided to hide it , no joke. On the top of their garage doors.!!!inside the garage. He is there and the door is always open. Fiji.. In Vanatu, sunday after church a runner takes the tithing and runs 2 hours to reach a boat and then gives the tithing to athe boats captain. Next stop, I guess, is Nadi [large airport] harbor and someone there takes the tithing to the bank. We have the mission auditor [Br. Stagg] in our mission group and he keeps us up on these details. So he is here trying to teach the Fijians how to aduit thelmselves!! Are those in SLC crazy, or what? And he is trying to stop the bishops in the villages from storing the tithing under the boards of their buris, [houses]. He and his wife are the last auditors the Church is sending to New Zealand and the entire Fiji Temple district, so they will be on their own about the time we leave. For lunch we are eating almost all of the entire frig. and then we'll polish off the rest for breakfast. Pres is trying to get a generator for his house. But we all have gas so we can cook some. So the plan is eat ice cream, shower at the temple and eat stuff at the Wells , as often as needed. Bula,Vinika Ya'll love Mum

"Are You my Daddy?"

"Help me....I don't know which one is my Daddy?"

Fast and Furious Golf

Russ just came out for three days of furious golf. The boys had fun, but I think they even had more fun confusing yet another one of our kiddos. Daisy was so confused. The first day she would not even go to Aaron because Russell was the first one she saw and then it freaked her out when Aaron walked in. She just buried her little head on Russ' shoulder and screamed everytime Aaron tried to take her. It was so funny. Eventually, she would just go back and forth between the two of them. Aaron has a beard now, so whenever one of them had her she would constantly touch their faces trying to figure out what the crap was happening. Good times. Thanks for the visit Russ.

You won't believe this...

You won't believe what just happened. My cleaning lady, [a relief society president] sent her friend to see me , just now. And she make Bula bags and sells them to everyone all over Fiji. So I bought one,it has a small makeup purse inside too. Anyways, back to my story. I brought to Fiji some fabric to have made into a sulu for myself. But I didn't have a decent pattern or skilrt to copy, until now. I found a great long white sulu , sewed up side seam, with an elastic band on the back. It was at Jacks along with uncle Franks bula shirt [size xxxxx5x]. So she will sew a skirt for me and I will keep you posted.
I have only a few mijnutes before I must run to the temple. Sr Bohman, our nurse out here. Gave me her most common complaints.
1 jock rot - shower twice a day, sit in front of the fan and dry the area - apply med powder and wear a sulu for 2 weeks
boils - very common don't use any body product not made in the good ol USA Ther are soooo many fake products out here. Example Nestles choc or other products are made under a name called Nestle's product. Actually they make a great British english toffee pudding that is not to sweet. Out of Britain and Australia. Our american products are actually formulated just for our skin type. Using products in the pacific will cause huge boils ---in the folds of the skin. She gave me just too much info on that one folks.
Dengue fever All you can do is to take aspirin, drink fluids and rest. I think it is carried by mosquitoes or in the water supply. Here the water supply is tainted and we use a 3 part water purification system.
The runs [aunt Cindys name] Eat more bananas, rice and run faster.....

Dad just got home from the indian barber. To keep you safe they just lock you and the barber in a huge cage-sorta like King Kong I think. Some time I'll take a photo for you. My hair curling system is state of the art. I can now make triangle curls, sausage curls, french something, and other crap I don't need. I will will my system to some dear Fijian sister, their hair is a terrible mess. At least they can now straighted it with my famous hair styling system. It must be stated like this to get my moneys worth - says Dad. love to all
Oh , oh, oh, we saw Amber, Claudia, David and Wade on Davids laptop. We have a camera in our laptop and were using the head phones, so we could hear. It truely felt like we were call in from the moon, Russ it seems is right. We are on the moom. It will take an act of congress to get a phone line here. Letter fron the Church on our status, letter on our credit and employment, some cash, instalation, and some other such hoop t doo. Aaron start up saving your money-right now!!!! All of ou love Mum.

Texas Our Texas

Mom I can't believe you paid that much for some curlers!!!! I am sure that you look great with Peter Pan hair. We took our annual bluebonnet pics and thought that we would share the beauty of Texas with those who no longer live here. April really is my best bud and we enjoy singing, especially country music, together. Her favorite song as of yesterday is Picture to Burn by Taylor Swift. Edgar lets her watch the video and sing along on the computer daily and every time we get in the car it is what she wants to her. Maybe I should buy the CD, then again maybe not. The past two weekends Edgar and I have be painting, descumming, and fixing the laziness of our houses past owners in our formerly bright yellow beach party themed guest bathroom. The result is very nice with our meager budget. We still have to address the blue countertop but that will be in the future. While I was taking the hardware off of the medicine cabinet door, I dropped a tiny screw down the drain of the sink. But due to all of the HGTV I have seen, I was able to take the plumbing apart and get the screw back (I thought that Mandy would be proud). We thought that mom would enjoy a before and after pic. Sorry, I don't know how to properly place the pics on the page, I am sure you can figure them out. And here is the ballet picture that you wanted mom. April will have a recital in May and will send you more then. Life here is good and we have plenty of things to do around the house to keep us busy. I hope everyone is well. I sent Wade the DVD's that you wanted and he will send them in your next package. We love you guys and are so proud of you!!!!!

I have curles and it cost 110$, Dad's estatic

Well thats the main news and, oh yes, /dads now seen my as to here to never been seen real fingernails. I can not fix that sentence and Dads napping. We've just finished with a temple update on Family Search. This the newest and only truely in depth, family search engine. It is not avaible in Houston yet, but, we are in through the backdoor of our New Zealand area reps. We've already been looking at Reynolds Cahoons wifes family. Our understanding is that they are Jewish, so, I wan't to know . Sr. Lelo [NZ help] is one of the few in the Pacific with insight into this area. We'll let you know how it goes. We have been so busy, but here goes. In the Pacific people just change their names at will. We had 2 familes come Vanitu Island, and the paper work was so bad . It is a miracle they were sealed at all. The bapismal font is dedicated to the dead in all temples and can not be used for the living, ever. Except twice here in Fiji. Once President Hinkley, this past year did allow it because there was no paper work on a 9 year old to be sealed to her family. So the Pres. just called Salt Lake and spoke to the Prophet and it was done. Just like that!! This week we had a similar, but sorta funny, different problem. Our little girl had been baptised by her Dad, she was only 71/2 not 8. You see her dad worked on a huge fishing troller [sp] and was out to sea for 5 mon. at a time , so he just did it early.... No can do, folks. So on this past friday, the pres. spoke to the Prophet for fifteen minutes and again it was done. In the Pacific people change their names, sometimes ....weekly.... No joke. To day the problem was discussed with the Lelos and there is no solution. It is a cultural thing. The family being sealed changed their minds 4 times on names for their kids. All on the same saturday!!! The family went to church in our ward and the mom bore her testimony. Both she and her husband were return missionaries!!! and still the name change thing. Only in the Pacific, folks.

Last week a very ol women , everyone calls Mother came to the temple and was she a mess. Her clothes were a dark grey and the smell made my cast iron stomach throw up in laundry. Sr. Ratuvukivuki took her to the showers and cleaned her and put her temple clothes on her. Then she went on a session. I have never cleaned anything of this kind. First thing was to run water on the clothes to help the smell and then I cleaned them 3 times in bleach water. I never thought to find weather or not to use bleach... Sometimes the Lord just takes a hand, in laundry. And I kid you not!. Her clothes turned out to be white!!! Who knew? When she left, and this makes me cry just now, she looked like a bride. And smelled so clean. She lives in a village rather far a way and when she does come she just pops in and stays with Sr. Ratuvukivuki for 3 or 4 weeks!!! Here it is not called a bladder problem. They say she is just late walking to the little house. Many have flush toilets in the villages but few are in their houses. Next I told everyone with ears " next time anyone come in who smelles, really bad, bad is sorta common here, Shower 'em , and give me the clothes and I can turn out laundry fast, before the session is over." These are Cookies rules in laundry!!! love Mum.

Blast From the Past

Twinners

Look how much I look like my Daddy. Mom's a little ticked, but I did get Hazel eyes! She seems to think this has something to do with her not being just an incubator.
Daisy does this total downward dog thing all the time. So flippin cute. Here it is in all the stages......

From the "Look, I am getting myself balanced!" to

"OK now check me out...I can even go up to my tippy toes while on my head with no flippin hands!"

then finally she says "SWEET, HUH?"
